If its a lithium battery, I wouldn't advise a dodgy homemade charger unless you REALY know what you are doing.
Ni-MH or Ni-Cd you simply need to put power through it. MUST be DC (the symbol for this is a line with dots under it), connect positive to positive.
Here are the output detail of my cheap charger:
12V, DC, 300mA
This is the kinda charger you leave going overnight and it MIGHT be charged in the morning. The more amps the faster it will charge, and try get a voltage a bit more than your battery.
To put all that simply, you want something that will give you:
10 to 15V DC
300mA (0.3A) to 3000mA (3A) (you could expect the 3A option to charge it in about a 1/2 hour, give or take depending on the mAH of your battery)
And keep an eye on it incase something goes wrong.
Oh and if its a Ni-Cd make sure you completely discharge it first,

Re: Charger for the mp5
Yeah something worth mentioning is that the battery is a Ni-MH and it's a 8.4V not a 9.6V which is abit of a facepalm on my behalf.

Re: Charger for the mp5
oh yes, I did that for work once, if its one of those standard round plug chagers, you just need to jam a wire into it, and wrap another around the outside. I THINK the inside is positive, but check that first or it wont work. Since your battery is a bit under the 9.6V charger, this should work.
